Marc Fields {LCAC-2}

Data for bibliographic records are stored in a MARC format.  The reader is referred to the MARC specifications for details on the structure of MARC. The system as provided by ITS can process all MARC fields, and the standard list is provided with the system depending on the MARC format used by the library.

Fields in the option:

Block 1:  MARC Field Information

This option contains the definitions of the MARC fields. The system is supplied with defaults for all the fields that are defined in the MARC manual. Since MARC makes provision for additional fields in the 9__ blocks which can be added for individual needs, fields can be added in this option.

Description
Tag Number N3  Enter the MARC tag number.
MARC Field Description A40 The description of the MARC tag must be entered here.
Authority Control A1 Here the user defines which tags must be under authority control. Tags under authority control will be handled by the system as authority data. Tags not under authority control will be handled as variable data.
Is the Tag Repeatable A1  MARC defines some fields as repeatable and some as non-repeatable. The system will allow repetition only of fields where this indicator is set to “Y”. Usually the defaults as set in MARC are maintained in this field, since this would influence the loading of data to other library systems.

Block 2:  Authority File Reference

This Block allows the user to create a single authority file for a number of different MARC fields.  A record must exist in this Block in respect of each field with a Y indicator in the previous Block.

Please note that once the system is operational, changes to this Block should only be done with the co-operation of ITS, otherwise problems will be encountered when information is retrieved.
