Ranks reflect the various seniority levels within the organization.
Ranks may be linked to Salary Scales and the System may be used to ensure that the Employee's Salary Notch is valid for the Salary Scale.
When a new rank is created, the system will automatically link it to a zero salary scale 9999. Users of ITS Payroll System will subsequently link the rank to its proper default salary scale(s) (refer to the Introduction to the Payroll System {HRM-2} and Rank / Salary Scale Combinations {FPRG-2}).
Field | Type & Length |
Description |
---|---|---|
Code | N5 | A unique number, that identifies this rank. |
Description | A30 | An institutionally defined rank. |
Subsidy Unit | N1 | Ranks may be linked to cost units for various types of personnel. By linking ranks and hence staff to these codes, the system can determine the number of staff members of each type within the institution. |
Relative Weight | N4.2 | The institution can, for internal staff planning purposes, link ranks to a certain factor or weight of the applicable Cost Unit, e.g. a university might define the rank of professor as the equivalent of 1,7 Subsidy Units of Type 1. |
STATS Level | N1 | For STATS purposes the internally defined ranks are linked
to those required for STATS reports and defined in STATS Rank Levels {PAMT-6}. For more information on the use of this field, refer to the on-line help for STATS Rank Levels {PAMT-6} |
Sort Seq. | N5 | This indicator defaults to the STATS Level when a new
record is created. The user can set this to a different value for
non-academic ranks, thus indicating the seniority levels of the various
administrative ranks. This should be done with care, since a number of reports are sensitive to this indicator, e.g. List of Ranks, per Department, Posts per Department, Personnel Detail per Dept / Post / App / GLA. These reports will sort first on STATS level and then on this sort indicator. |
Inactive From | (DD-MON-YYYY) | This rank will be inactive from this date, and all input programs where the rank code can be entered will test that system date is earlier than this date, otherwise the rank may not be used. Report {PACS-3} will validate for all personnel linked to inactive ranks on a given date. |
Occupational Level | N1 | Supply the occupational level applicable to this rank from the <LIST> supplied. |

Special ranks must be created for
“Pay by Claim” personnel, the default zero salary scale
9999 being retained in these cases. Note: If a user has to delete a rank code, the default salary scale must be removed first via option {FPRG-2}. |
